Lock the front for now on a budget, spool cost about 150.then save for an elocker or ARB air locker, it will end up being cheaper in the long run cause your tires will last longer. I am having a difficult time installing an Aussie Locker into a Ford 8.8 rear axle out of a 1999 Ford explorer w/ 31 spline shafts. A thread started on the Maverick forum re: feedback on the new locker. Luckily I had done mine recently, so this wasnt a problem. I didnt take pics and I wont bother you with the details of the installation, but I figured Id give you some highlights: If you havent replaced / removed the hubs recently, plan on that being a pain in the ass.
#AUSSIE LOCKER PROBLEMS INSTALL#
Yeah the aussie unlocks off power but in a way it's almost worse than a full spool cause the second your back on power and that thing locks back up it can make things wonky real quick at highway speed. Not to mention it's just not as safe, yea blah blah blah everyone says they get used to the way it handles but first bit of inclement weather and that thing will handle like a civic with fast food trays under the rear tires and the ebrake on. As far as the rear is concerned.do NOT lock the rear of the daily driver, it will get around but will destroy your tires, make parking in lots annoying as fuck and the added stress isn't good for the axle. my only issue with it is even with one wheel unlocked I can still barely turn the bastard in rock gardens, but that's a problem hydrosteering will fix. I would prefer the predictability of the spool over the lunchbox but I have an aussie in my yota upfront. Aussie or spool if you have manual hubs works great upfront.
